hiiii friend,
every time i finish something big i lose all motivation to start the next thing. i have 2.5 million followers and this has never once gotten easier.
i just wrapped up the 25 series i'd been making for what felt like an eternity. one lesson per video, every single day, about things i've had to unlearn by 25. it did well. people responded in a way i didn't expect. and then my birthday came around and i went offline for a few days. i came back to the most blank, empty, genuinely-have-nothing feeling i've had in a long time.
and the embarrassing part? i knew it was coming. this happens every single time i finish something or take a break. my brain still convinces me that this time is different. this time it's actually over. this time i've lost it for real.
so many of you emailed me after the last newsletter asking basically the same question. how do you get around mental blocks when it comes to creating? which honestly made me feel less alone and also kind of like... great, none of us have figured this out.
after six years of creating content professionally, across multiple platforms, with over two and a half million followers, i still sit there some days and genuinely feel like i have nothing. so if you're there right now, hi. we're the same person. and that's what we're talking about today.
the thing i have to remind myself every time i’m stuck
when i'm in a rut, there's a spiral that happens. i have nothing, nothing is possible, i'm behind, i'm losing momentum, i'll never get it back. and the longer i sit in it, the more real it feels.
what pulls me out, and stay with me on this one, is thinking about the marvel cinematic universe. all the different realities that could exist from this one moment. me feeling like shit and having nothing done is just one version of events. there's a reality where i figure it out. there's a reality where i figure it out faster than i expected. there's a reality where it goes really well.
sitting in the spiral doesn't make those other realities impossible. it just means i'm choosing to live in the worst one.
so before i do anything, i have to call myself out first. because the idea that nothing is possible is objectively not true. something is always possible. the tiniest thing is always possible. and i'm being a bit of a pontz if i keep insisting otherwise.
inertia is real and it is doing something to you
an object won't change its motion unless acted on by an unbalanced force. that's physics. and it's also exactly what happens when i stop posting.
when you're in motion, posting, creating, thinking, iterating, everything feels manageable. ideas come. the next step is obvious. and then you stop. maybe for a birthday. maybe for a break. maybe because life happened. and suddenly the motion is gone and everything that felt easy now feels enormous.
getting back to it doesn't feel like returning to something familiar. it feels like starting from scratch. like you've lost all the muscle memory.
and i had to accept that it feels so hard because it IS hard. inertia is not a character flaw. it's not laziness. it's just physics applied to your creative life. and the only way through is to apply a force. but it does not have to be a big one.
the lie your brain tells you
when i'm stuck, my brain tells me the only way to feel back on track is to come back with something really good. like i need to prove i'm still here. make up for lost time.
and that thought alone, the pressure of needing it to be good, makes me do absolutely nothing.
because "something really good" feels too big to start. so i procrastinate by doing literally anything else. i reorganise my notes app. i respond to emails from three weeks ago. i watch content for "research." i do everything except the thing. and then i feel worse because now i've wasted the day AND i still have nothing.
the lie is that you need to produce something great to feel back on track. the truth is you just need to produce something. anything. something so small it almost doesn't count.
