i’ll be honest. i’m still coming down off that high of hitting 1 mil followers on instagram last week. every time i open my damn phone, i’m still like “what??? that’s crazy!!!” i also love all the learnings that i have because i got to this place, and i’m excited to see what more there is to learn.
but at the same time, there is this looming cloud attached to a milestone like that. i have seen a lot of accounts die at these big milestones because they start to think their work is good enough.
they have their growth, they have their moment, and then they think that the thing that got them there will be the thing that continues to grow them. maybe they’ll die at 500K, or they will die at a million, but they peak and then never hit that same growth again. so when i really think about it, i get scared that that’s gonna happen to me. that i will plateau or lose relevancy now that i’m here.
the downside to success:
i have seen this happen so many times. there’s all this hype around this person as their account is growing fast. but then the hype drops and their rate of growth drops. and then their viewership numbers start to just tank slowly. literally tank, tank, tank, tank. they retain the followers, but their actual content itself is no longer giving them growth. and if you compare their followership to their average viewership, it’s not good.
so i went into this week thinking about what takes you from 1 mil to 3 mil, to 10 mil. because nothing would hurt me more than to hit a million followers and then see my average viewership just slowly tick down.
so that’s what this week’s newsletter is about. and if you are on the pathway of growing your own accounts, whatever number you are at now, hopefully what i’ve learnt on this topic is helpful to you too.

i believe so many accounts die because they continued to do the thing they were doing to get there…..
