hiiii friend,
have you ever sat down to plan out the content you’re going to post and had a moment where you were like, wait…. is my goal to get the highest views possible? or is it to get more followers?
or are you like most people and post every video hoping to do both?
if you do, that’s totally ok. like i said, it’s what most people do. and to grow your account you do need to grow both your viewership and your followers. but if there’s anything i’ve learnt over the years, it’s that you have to focus on one goal at a time, not two.
you need to make a decision: views or followers?
if you’re posting content but you don’t know what metric you are ultimately aiming for, you’re going to just feel scatterbrained about everything you do. there are too many factors. too many unknowns. you'll give up really fast because you’re trying to do everything at once.
so over this week and next week, i am going to give you my thoughts on why you might aim for views or followers (((( but not both at the same time )))). then i’m going to break down my top performing videos so you can start to understand why they were high performers, either on the views or followership side, so you can use my learnings for your own content.
by the end of next week, you will be able to decide what the most important goal is for you right now so you can focus everything on that. once you have that going and you know the engine to increase that metric, then you can put your focus on another goal. so let’s talk about views.
why you might want your #1 goal to be views
if you are a smaller account and your followership isn't skyrocketing, you probably are going to want to focus on views first. it’s the most accessible goal when you’re starting out. when you go for views, you also get more data to learn from faster compared to aiming for followers.
followership is a bit harder because it occurs in smaller numbers. every video you post, you might be going up one follower, then zero, then zero, then zero, then one follower. if that’s where you are right now, you can't make a hypothesis as to why that's occurring because the data set is so small.
but if one video gets a thousand more views than another one, that is a good amount of data you can learn from. then you’ll want to keep trying to get a thousand more, and a thousand more. because then you're starting to understand the craft of creating content.
the thing to remember though is views are not always helpful for your brand. if you streaked down the road naked, you'd get views. would that help you in the long term? no. but you would get the views. ultimately you have to think about getting views in the context of your brand, not just for the sake of numbers.
every other metric you want to grow starts with a view
think about it. a comment comes from a view, a share comes from a view, a follow comes from a view. you're casting a net and then bringing people in to interact with your content, right?
that’s why i generally think viewership should come first. but honestly, it really does depend on what you’re after personally. i could look at your situation and still not be able to tell you whether you should aim for viewership or followers first. so take everything i say with a grain of salt.
but today we’re talking about how to maximise your viewership, because ultimately you have to garner a lot of views to get the conversion to followers.
sooooo what drives high viewership?
everyone tells you to make your content ‘relatable’ but i believe there’s a spectrum of relatability when it comes to creating content, so this is the framework i use……..
