hiiii friend,

it’s actually been a super busy week leading up to running the ny marathon in less than two weeks but somehow i’m surviving :)

anyway, we’re up to part three of this series where we are breaking down how i make money as a creator. to recap in case you missed the previous weeks, you can catch up first then come back…

today we’re talking about platform monetisation, which unless you have been a creator for awhile, i’m guessing you don’t know a whole lot about.

so i want to get into what it is, how it works, who it’s for, and what it looks like for me.

what’s platform monetisation?

first of all, in case you’ve never heard of this way of making money, it’s essentially where the platforms pay you for posting content.

this is because they are running ads on their platforms, so they determine the dollar (more like cent) value of getting a viewer to watch an ad before/after your content.

they do this because they want to incentivise creators to make good content on their platform, because that makes people want to spend more time there. that means they have more opportunities to show ads to those people and sell them stuff.

how it works

the first thing to understand is that how much you can get paid for a piece of content changes based on a bunch of variables. these are things like your engagement, audience demographics, watch time, video topic etc. which means each piece of content has a different rate.

most of the time you will have an earnings rate for a piece of content, which depends on how the platform ranks your content’s value. then you get paid that rate per 1000 views you get.

what kind of accounts can get platform monetisation

each platform has its own criteria that you need to meet to get paid for posting. these are generally around things like:

  • follower count

  • being in an eligible country

  • no strikes against your account

  • cumulative viewership over a certain period of time

since i’m in nz, i can access platform monetisation on facebook, youtube, snapchat, x, and more recently instagram (!!!). other countries also have monetisation available on tiktok.

personally, right now i’m monetising on youtube, facebook, and instagram.

((( there are multiple ways to make money from content on instagram, but they don’t yet compare to the monetisation you can get on other platforms like facebook, youtube and tiktok.

i think they will start rolling out better monetisation programmes as they are currently beta testing paying creators for statics/carousels and reels in a few countries. something to keep an eye out for )))

who is this an achievable revenue stream for?
