hiiii friend,

first off, how did you go on posting some statics in the last week? if you took something from my last newsletter and tried it out, reply to this email and let me know how you went. would love to hear.

and if you missed last week’s newsletter about the ONLY instagram growth hack i’ll ever vouch for, you can go read it now right here.

today i want to get super practical with you again, because the whole point of this newsletter is that i’m sharing everything i’ve learnt on my own socials so you can grow yours, too.

i want to talk about onscreen text and how to use it to X your viewership.

why choosing your onscreen text is one of the most important parts of posting

tweaking and trialling different forms of OST is honestly one of the most effective ways to increase your viewership on a piece of content. before i get into the how, you are probably thinking the job of OST is to ‘hook’ viewers, but thinking of it that way can set you up to believe the wrong thing about what the beginning of a video is supposed to do.

scrolling on a shortform video feed is not the same as choosing something to watch on youtube. on youtube, the audience actively chooses what to watch. but on instagram or tiktok, your audience is getting fed your video.

so the onscreen text’s job is to set up the viewer with the context they need. it’s a bid for their attention, so it has to be captivating enough for someone to stay and keep watching versus scrolling.

your OST is not the same as your ‘hook’

i believe calling the beginning of a video a ‘hook’ is misleading, because it can make you think you need to be high energy or clickbaity or say outlandish things to get attention. when in reality - you just need to give the viewer enough context to let them decide that your video is for them.

idk the stats but HEAPS of people watch reels without sound. so you have to build that context with text and assume the audio cues may not be there.

the best part about learning how to write really great OST is it is the easiest thing you can do to increase your views. plus, it takes no extra production as it’s just putting words on a video you’re already making. literally so good.

so let’s get into my exact process for writing OST so you can 3x your views this week……
